D-DAY & NORMANDY
Omaha Beach Tours in Normandy
Explore Omaha Beach, the Normandy American Cemetery and the historic American D-Day sector with a private local guide. Choose the way you want to experience this remarkable part of Normandy — by private vehicle, on foot or by e-bike.
Discover Omaha Beach — and Understand What Happened Here
Omaha Beach is one of the most significant sites of the Normandy landings and one of the most powerful places to understand the American experience of D-Day.
On June 6, 1944, American forces landed along this coastline under extremely difficult conditions. Today, the beach, the surrounding cliffs, the German defensive positions and the nearby Normandy American Cemetery form an extraordinary historical landscape.
But to really understand Omaha, it is not enough to know what happened. We need to understand why it happened this way.
Why were American casualties so high here? Why did Omaha come so close to disaster while the landing at Utah Beach, only a few miles away, developed so differently? Why were the German defenses so effective? How did the presence of elements of the 352nd Infantry Division change the battle? Why did the first waves of the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions become so disorganized?
And then, perhaps most importantly: where and how did the German defenses finally give way?
How did American soldiers make their way off the beach? Which exits did they use? What role did the German strongpoints WN60, WN61 and WN62 play? Why did some positions hold while others were eventually overcome? And why did the story of German machine-gunner Heinrich Severloh become so closely associated with the legend of “Bloody Omaha”?
These are the questions I have explored through the battlefield, military records and the terrain itself — trying to understand not only what happened, but why.
My Omaha Beach tours are built around this approach. Rather than simply showing you the monuments and the famous sites, I take you onto the battlefield to examine the places where these events actually unfolded, reconstruct the movements of the American units and understand how the terrain and German defenses shaped the battle.
Depending on the experience you choose, we can follow the routes taken by the American troops, explore the German strongpoints or trace the first breakthroughs from the beach towards the heights.
The objective is simple: not just to see Omaha Beach, but to understand what happened here.
Why Visit Omaha Beach?
Omaha Beach is much more than a beach. The landscape itself helps explain the challenges faced by the American forces on D-Day.
From the shoreline to the cliffs above the beach, the terrain, German defensive positions and surrounding valleys reveal why this sector became one of the most difficult landing areas on June 6, 1944.
A visit to Omaha Beach becomes even more meaningful when combined with the Normandy American Cemetery and, depending on your itinerary, Pointe du Hoc or other historic sites along the American sector.
